Experian actually got its start as CCN, an information services business that was established in 1980 under the parent company, GUS in the United Kingdom. The company grew out of an internal department that provided checking facilities and marketing information to other parts of the GUS group. CCN was responsible for developing the databases, systems, and analytical skills needed to support consumer lending. It became the UK’s leading credit bureau.
You often hear about the importance of maintaining good credit so that negative information won’t be reported to the three credit bureaus, but what are they and how do they affect you? They are major players in the credit world and have a huge affect on your everyday life, which is why it’s important to understand the role of the credit bureaus. You definitely don’t want a lack of knowledge to have a negative effect on your day-to-day life.
Lets take a deeper dive into what the credit bureaus are and how they affect you…
There are three major consumer credit reporting bureaus – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. The credit bureaus provide an important financial service for lenders and consumers by collecting and reporting consumer credit information. Lenders, credit card companies, insurers, landlords and utility companies all use the information provided by these agencies to make decisions about your creditworthiness as a borrower or customer.
The three major credit bureaus are separate agencies, and work independently of one another, each using their own systems to calculate three separate credit scores which may differ from one another. When reporting information to the credit bureaus, lenders must report to each one of the credit bureaus separately. Therefore, each credit bureau may have different information.
