Chase Bank is being sued by a Florida woman who says the bank declared her as dead and ruined her credit as a result. After she and her husband attempted to have their mortgage loan modified, she said things took an ugly turn, leaving her no choice but to sue the bank.
Woman Says Bank Declared Her as Deceased
Wrenella Pierre of Oviedo, Fla. is suing Chase Bank under the claim that the bank declared her as deceased and, as a result, has ruined her credit. It began when the home of Pierre and her husband declined in value, leaving them to push for a loan modification, which they attempted five or six times unsuccessfully.
Then, for no apparent reason, the bank began notifying credit agencies that she had died. It even sent her family a condolence letter saying, “We are sorry to hear about your loss.”
She contacted the bank to let them know a terrible mistake had occurred and that she had not died. But even a month after setting the record straight, she said the credit agencies were still reporting her as deceased. Her next action was to take the bank to court.
Chase Bank Goes to Court
Because of the losses she’s suffered as a result of Chase Bank’s huge error, Pierre is suing for damages. Her attorney told the media, “I don’t know why the bank made this type of disastrous mistake.” He went on to explain that Pierre has been unable to have credit extended because of her deceased status.
A spokeswoman for JPMorgan Chase told the Orlando Sentinel that the bank would not discuss the details of the case with the media. She simply told the newspaper, “We’re investigating how it happened.”

No mystery; she was rude to someone on the phone and they fixed her good.
Be careful all you conservatives could be next. Don’t mess with the fed reserve.
Don’t think for a minute that this was a mistake.
CHASE BANK. Nuff said.
It figures! Give people a little power and they will do anything and everything to prove they have it. It sucks!!!! The poor and elderly are the most vulnerable because they don’t have the money to fight these power hungry idiots!
I wonder if it was meant as a threat…. Pay up or you will have an unfortunate ‘accident’.
I guess the banks are getting a little heavier handed.
Bank of America did this to my neighbor even though he gets social security every month and does his banking at another bank. He was denied a loan at his new bank because he was deceased. He cancelled his BOA Visa a few months ago and probably some person in India marked him as dead. Turned into a royal pain for him.
My question is this: How can you report someone else dead without a deathh certificate? Why were not the credit agencies seeing red flags on this. I would have said: “So you have me as dead? Where is your proof? Where is the death certificate that says….I’m dead?”
When my mother passed away, I had to provide a DC to all her creditors. These are desperate times, and the banks will resort as well to desperate measures!
Morgan and Chase financed my home. Scares me to death everytime I hear stuff like this. I’m afraid I might be next.
I think they tried to foreclose on some people, too didn’t they?
Wow.. This happened to me about two months !! I was trading my 08 fusion in for a colorado truck ! I had bought the Fusion new in 08..
Every dealershgip I WENT TO , TURNED ME DOWN WITH A SHEEPISH LOOK ON THEIR FACES.. Sorry you are deceased..LOOKING RIGHT AT ME !!!!! LONG STORY SHORT TOOK AN INTELLIGENT, CAR SALESLADY, TO WALK ME THROUGH a few specifics. My credit stinks, as it shows all the turndowns. By the way I got my truck, my husband co-signed for me !!
evil chase. evil evil.. they are the worst of the worst of the WORST!
Chase bank – too big to fail. Isn’t that what they said about the dinosaurs? Chase, BofA, Wells Fargo all ought to be broken up, absolutely destroyed, by the anti-trust people in the government – oh, I forgot, they own the government. Big banks are bad business – avoid – use credit unions!
LOL! You all are funny. It was almost assuredly an accident of some kind. I have worked in bank call centers and customer “service” departments and it would be almost impossible for anybody to mark her dead without leaving proof that they did it. They would know that eventually they wold be fired. Furthermore the necessary rank to mark a person dead is relatively high, not some lowly phone monkey who doesn’t care if they get fired.
Not that I defend CHASE. The lack of policies and proceedures that WORK to correct such errors represents their lack of give a s%^T about their retail banking customers.
I bet she called customer service and the agent sent an email to their boss who emailed the customer asking for documents that the department head said they would need.
Then those documents were sent to the wrong department or to the right department but using channels that only get checked- well never cause the last time this happened was 3 years ago and the person who dealt with it retired and didn’t train their replacement to check it because they forgot or some such nonsense.
Think about how stuff gets screwed up where you work. It’s just like that except when banks screw up the dammage is personal and costs real people $$$.
chase bank is the worse. everyone should steer clear of any credit deal sponsored by chase!!!!!
I worked in banking for 6 years. They would need a death certificate. I financed a car with my ex-husband and he was supposed to refinance to take me off after the divorce. I called Chase (after they were given the divorce decree) and told them I wasn’t liable by law. They told me that they could not honor divorce decrees… Funny since they used that to change my name on the loan without my consent! Stay away from Chase!
