How Debt Takes Its Toll Beyond Money Problems

Frustrated Man Worries About Economy, Unpaid Bills and Retiremen

We all know that debt takes it toll on your financial situation and does so rather dramatically. When debt mounts higher, your money is no longer your own. You are paying more and more in interest charges, getting nothing in return. You have less freedom to do the things you want to do and you may even find your financial situation on the verge of complete collapse.

Debt does more than just impact your financial situation; it can also cause problems in non-monetary areas of your life. Taking the necessary steps to reduce your debt will help you battle these problems that extend beyond money:

Anxiety and Depression

When you are so far in debt that you begin to wonder where you will get the money to pay for things, you might find that you become anxious and depressed. Concern over money can lead to regular, pressing worries. This, in turn, can lead to depression.

Anxiety and depression can have serious consequences if unchecked, including leading to self-medication through binge drinking and drug abuse. Suicidal thoughts and neglect of family members can also be possible effects of anxiety and depression.

Strained Relationships

Debt often leads to relationship strain. The causes of debt can result in finger pointing and blame, as partners fight about whose fault it is that debt is so high. Fights about what to do with money, how to get out of debt and why the money situation is so bad can lead to deterioration in marriage relationships.

Additionally, the increased stress can mean snappishness with children, friends and other relatives and can strain those relationships as well.

Effects on Children

Constant irritation and anxiety can lead to shortness of temper with children. Debt can lead to a tense family situation, creating an environment that is not emotionally safe for children. Children know when something is wrong, and if you are taking out your frustration with the debt situation on your children, they begin to think that it is their fault. Depression and other psychological effects might be felt long after the debt situation improves and children grow older.

Feelings of Self-Loathing

Even though our society has become more accepting of debt, there is still a good chance that your debt will bring on some degree of self-loathing. When you are not satisfied with yourself, it can result in your feelings spilling over to other areas of your life, including at work and in relationships with those you love. If you are ashamed of your debt, or trying to hide it so others don’t find out, it can cause increased emotional problems for you.

Mid-Life Crisis

In some cases, all the feelings of anger and frustration surrounding debt can result in mid-life crisis. After everything builds up, you might start to feel that you should be getting more of what you “deserve” and wondering where all this debt came from. You wonder why you aren’t getting ahead.

In some cases, it can lead to an attitude in which you blame others for your life not going right. You aren’t where you think you should be and you start blaming your spouse and maybe your children for all your debt and the bondage it represents. In some cases, all of these feelings–especially if not shared with a partner–can lead to a mid-life crisis including an affair or even a divorce.

In the end, it is important to consider the costs that debt can have and remember that they aren’t always financial costs. Do your best to get out of debt quickly and avoid building up more debt so that you don’t end up in a position where the pressure becomes so much that you destroy everything that is truly important to you.
