Good News: Economists Optimistic about 2010 Hiring Outlook

A new survey released shows that economists are optimistic about the recovery and believe that it will continue in 2010 as job losses slow and hiring picks up. According to results from the survey, which was released on Monday by the National Association for Business Economics, all respondents said the economy will show some type of growth this year.

Data from the Survey

Some data from the quarterly survey include:

  • 100 percent of respondents expect gains in gross domestic product (GDP) this year.
  • 61 percent expect the growth to exceed 2 percent.
  • Nearly one-third of respondents expect hiring to increase in the first half of 2010.
  • 40 percent of economists expect the financial and services sectors to add jobs.
  • 35 percent of respondents report that credit conditions are adversely impacting their business – this number is down from last year.

What’s interesting is that as the economists from the survey report on a positive outlook for 2010, CNNMoney.com reveals that over 22 Fortune 500 companies are hiring with over 87,000 positions currently available.   1. Edward Jones – Looking to hire over 600 financial advisors and branch administrators
  2. Wegman’s Food Market – Hoping to hire over 1,500 in-store positions (customer-service team members, chefs, team leaders and department managers).
  3. Google – Over 1,000 positions are available across the globe and range from software engineers and user-experience researchers to product marketing and human resources professionals.
  4. Qualcomm – The company has 617 current opening in the areas of engineering and business.
  5. Cisco – There are 595 opening positions with this company with 45 percent of them being engineering and design, 25 percent services and the rest sales, finance, marketing, IT, manufacturing, supply chain and HR.
