Obama to Discuss Job Creation in December Summit

Posted in Financial News

On Thursday, President Barack Obama announced at the White House his plans to hold a December meeting that would focus on job creation and boosting economic growth. The meeting date is not set, but will include administration officials, chief executives, small businesses and labor unions.

About the Summit

Obama wants to hold the meeting because while the economy has improved some by cutting taxes on the middle class and extending unemployment insurance, nothing has led to the job growth the country desperate needs, he said.

While there are limits to what the government can do, he acknowledges its responsibility to take as many steps as possible toward growth.

Unemployment Continues to Rise

Obama’s speech comes only a week after the Federal Reserve’s announcement that unemployment had risen from 9.8 percent in September to 10.2 percent in October (more than 8 milion unemployed since the recession), which is the highest unemployment rate in 26 years.

In his speech, Obama promises to continue his effort to help those Americans who want to find work actually find it.

What to Do in the Meantime …

Until the president holds his meeting (and actually comes up with a plan and implements it), there are things you could do to help you make ends meet.

For instance, with temporary employment on the rise in many industries, my might look for a temp job. Also, keep in mind that unemployment benefits have been extended an additional 20 weeks to workers in states with a jobless rate of 8.5 or higher.

Also, saving what you can and budgeting your expenses are useful ways to manage your money as you wait for permanent work to come your way. For more tips on ways to save, visit Go Banking Rates.

Do you think the government has done enough to create jobs?
