What are Hedge Funds?

Stocks, bonds, hedge funds and money market investments are all different opportunities for people to invest their money in order to make it grow. Each investment is unique, with different ways of earning income, a variety of risk factors, and an assortment of finite points that investors need to be aware of before putting a any money into any one of those options.

Hedge funds are a type of investment that has been around for about 50 years. Hedge funds were originally named because of the overall strategy involved in how they work. The strategy called "shorting" or "short sales" is a bet that the value for securing will decrease. This is call "hedging;" hence, the name hedge funds.

Hedge funds are established to counterbalance possible decreases in their main markets by using an approach that is constructed to lessen the possibility of business risks; while the businesses can still be able to profit and keep inventories. The art of shorting is done by selling a financial unit, the seller doesn't actually own at the time of the sale, but they have the intent of purchasing later when the price lowers.

Hedge funds are unique from other investment opportunities for several reasons. The do not have to register with the SEC. They do not have a prospectus that they need to adhere to. You can usually invest in a variety of different assets and can choose anything that may make profit. Investors can diversify their investments without a percentage cap limiting their choices. Finally investors have the ability to borrow money and have great leverage allowing great gains if the market goes up our crippling losses if the market goes down.

Before playing the hedge fund or investment game it is important to thoroughly research the types of investments that work for your investment goals. Investors must be comfortable with the investments they choose and the risk level they are going to take.
