Today is Free Shipping Day, also dubbed Free Shipping Friday. With Dec. 25 literally right around the corner, procrastinators around the country are scrambling to get their gifts shipped in time for the holidays.
Luckily, the momentum of Free Shipping Day has picked up over the past few years giving shoppers yet another reason to celebrate. Thousands of retailers are participating in Free Shipping Friday 2011 and guaranteeing consumers that goodies and packages will be delivered by Christmas eve.
Free Shipping Day Promises Delivery by Dec. 24
Not only do shoppers save money from 100 percent free shipping for this holiday shopping initiative, they also can rest easy knowing that family and friends will get their holiday treasures on time without question.
Free Shipping Day boasts that listed 2,000+ retailers on their website will absorb shipping expenses and ensure that presents make it under the tree by Dec. 24.
In 2010, Free Shipping Day was ranked the third biggest spending day during the holiday season, after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. ComScore reported that a record $942 million online sales were made on Free Shipping Day 2010, an increase of 61 percent compared to previous year’s Free Shipping Day event.
Free Shipping Friday Growing in Popularity
While this holiday event has set impressive records thus far, it’s hard to believe that Free Shipping Day is a relatively new phenomenon. In 2008, Free Shipping Day was born thanks to Luke Knowles and his wife. They recognized how much online retail sales pick-up over the tail-end of the year, especially in the few days leading to Christmas day. However, Knowles recognized that last-minute gift shopping in itself, has become a regular part of the holiday spirit.
Within two weeks, Free Shipping Day was established and major retailers like JCPenny jumped on-board the Free Shipping Day train. Subsequent years have seen increased retail sales in the online marketplace.
Holiday shoppers who have yet to purchase presents or are hoping to close out the last few items on their gift lists can save money on shipping with Free Shipping Day which lasts until midnight today.
