Banks and Credit Unions That Offer Free Checking Accounts

©GOBankingRates

Whether you’re looking for your first checking account or want to switch to a different one, the number of choices can be overwhelming. Start by looking for a free checking account. Free checking accounts are a great deal — and they come in various forms.

Here are the five main types of free checking accounts:

Depending on your specific needs, one of these types of free checking accounts might be better for your needs than another. Take a closer look at each of the five types of free bank accounts, and find the best credit unions and banks for free checking accounts.

Free Checking Accounts With No Minimum Balance and No Minimum Deposit

A checking account with no fees, no minimum balance and no minimum opening deposit is a truly free bank account. In addition having all those features, the Schwab Bank High Yield Investor Checking Account offers free bill pay, standard checks and a Schwab Bank Visa Platinum debit card — on top of paying 0.15% APY on your account balance. Other institutions, such as Ally Bank, offer 24/7 live customer service and an even higher rate of 0.60% APY on balances above $15,000.

Typically, you can find a fee-free account at a credit union or online bank. Some national banks, however, offer accounts that make the list, including First National Bank’s First National Checking and Huntington National Bank’s Asterisk-Free Checking.

Here are free checking accounts that don’t require a minimum opening deposit or minimum balance:

Free Checking Accounts With Opening Deposit Requirements

Some banks require a minimum deposit to open a checking account but charge no monthly maintenance fees. In many cases, the opening deposit requirement is minimal — for example, ESL Federal Credit Union’s Free Checking Account requires only $1 to open. Many other accounts, including Nationwide Bank’s Member Checking, First Bank’s Student Checking Account and San Diego County Credit Union’s Free Checking require only a $25 opening deposit.

Because you’ll likely want to make a deposit when you open your account anyway, $25 or less is a low minimum to earn free checking. Some accounts do charge much higher minimum opening deposits, however, like EverBank’s Yield Pledge Checking, which requires $5,000.

None of the accounts in the following table require a minimum monthly balance after you make the initial minimum opening deposit. Here are free checking accounts with opening deposit requirements:

Free Checking Accounts With Balance Requirements

Sometimes a bank account is free of maintenance charges only when you consistently keep a minimum amount of money in it. Most of these accounts also require a minimum opening deposit.

In many cases, these requirements can be minimal. For example, Astoria Bank’s Simple Checking requires you to make a $25 opening deposit and maintain a balance of $250 to earn free checking.

In some cases, however, the requirements can be quite high. For instance, Citibank requires an average monthly balance of $200,000 in eligible linked deposit, retirement and investment accounts to waive the fee on its Citigold checking account. And San Diego County Credit Union requires a $5,000 minimum deposit and a $25,000 average balance for fee-free access to its High-Yield Checking Account.

Here are free checking accounts with minimum balance requirements:

Free Checking Accounts With Direct Deposit, Military Affiliation, Bank Relationship or Other Requirements

If you’re in the military, you can save on checking account fees. Synovus, for instance, offers a military checking account with a $100 minimum opening deposit and no fees as long as you set up a monthly direct deposit of at least $1 from your Defense Finance and Account Services paycheck. Fifth Third Bank also has a military checking account with no fees if you maintain a $1,500 balance across qualifying accounts at the bank or have monthly direct deposits totaling $500 or more.

If you’re not in the military, direct deposits can still get you free checking at numerous institutions, including Citizens Bank’s One Deposit Checking, Union Bank’s Banking By Design account or Great Western Bank’s VIP Free Interest Checking.

Sometimes, a banking relationship is all you need to score free checking. U.S. Bank’s Gold Checking Account is fee-free if you have an open U.S. Bank personal loan, credit line or credit card. Regions Bank’s LifeGreen eAccess Account is an online bank account that’s free if you make at least 10 Regions CheckCard and/or credit card purchases per month.

Here are checking accounts that are free with direct deposit, a military or other relationship, or some other type of requirement:
