Before digital banking, people often had to visit a bank branch to do their banking. That meant opening a checking or savings account at whichever bank or credit union was in the neighborhood. Thus, there was little need for extensive research on which banks have the best rates and sign-up bonuses.
But the internet has vastly changed banking, as it has other industries. In the United States, for example, you can open an account at almost any bank as long as you are a U.S. citizen. While many choices are good, they also can make it difficult and perhaps overwhelming to decide where to open an account.
Of course, bank offers aren’t everything. You probably have other requirements, like low fees and minimum balances. Fortunately, the banks on this list meet those requirements in most cases. More important, narrowing it down to a few options instead of being overwhelmed with hundreds of choices can make it much easier to decide. If you are considering opening a checking or savings account, these banks have some of the best offers right now.
Offer: Up to $250
SoFi Banking will give you a bonus of up to $250 when you open an account and set up direct deposit. You must have direct deposits of $5,000 in the first 25 days to claim the $250 offer. If your deposits total less than $5,000, the bonus will be just $50.
Opening an account with SoFi Banking isn’t just about the bonus. The account has lots of other perks, like up to 3.75% APY and getting paid up to two days early. Plus, there are no monthly fees or minimum balances.
Chase Total Checking
Offer: Up to $300
Chase Total Checking has an offer of up to $300 when you set up direct deposit within 90 days of enrollment. Unlike some bank offers, you don’t need direct deposits totaling a specific amount to qualify for the bonus. You must have direct deposits of $500 or more per month to avoid the $12 service fee. Alternatively, you can avoid the service fee with a minimum daily balance of $1,500 or with a daily average balance of $5,000 in your Chase Total Checking and qualifying linked Chase bank accounts.
HSBC Premier Checking
Offer: Up to $500
HSBC is offering a bonus of up to $500 when you open a Premier Checking account. To qualify, you must open your account by Feb. 15 and have qualifying direct deposits of at least $10,000 for three consecutive calendar months from the second full calendar month after account opening.
Also, there is a $50 monthly service fee unless you maintain at least $75,000 of deposits and/or investments in your HSBC accounts. Alternatively, you can have at least $5,000 in total direct deposits per month or maintain a U.S. residential mortgage loan with an original loan amount of at least $500,000.
PNC Virtual Wallet Spend
Offer: Up to $400
Right now, PNC will give you a bonus of up to $400 if you open a Virtual Wallet account. You can earn a $400 reward if you open a Virtual Wallet with the Performance Select tier. Alternatively, you can earn $200 if you open and use a new Virtual Wallet with Performance Spend or a $50 reward if you open and use a new Virtual Wallet.
Each of these combinations also has its own direct deposit requirements, though they can be waived by meeting certain requirements. With Virtual Wallet Spend, you need direct deposits of at least $500. With Performance Spend, you need $2,000 of direct deposits. Lastly, with Performance Select, you need at least $5,000 of direct deposits.
Chase Business Complete Banking
Offer: Up to $300
If you have banking needs for your business, you can earn up to $300 by opening a Chase Business Complete Banking account. You must visit a branch or chase.com/business to earn the bonus and open a new Chase Business Complete Checking account. Then, deposit $2,000 or more in new money into your new checking account within 30 days of offer enrollment. You must also maintain that balance for at least 60 days and complete at least five qualifying transactions.
