Methodology: GOBankingRates used the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.’s (FDIC) directory to find the largest bank by total deposits inside of market, meaning deposits within the state. Banks must be headquartered in the state. Number of offices and total deposits — inside and outside of the state — are for informational purposes only and do not factor into the ranking. In three states, Massachusetts, New York and Utah, the second-largest banks are listed because the largest provide investment and wealth management services rather than traditional banking services. The number of branches listed for each bank was sourced from the FDIC and found using each bank’s FDIC number. The number of branches that banks list on their websites might differ from this number. All data used to conduct this study was compiled and verified on Aug. 1, 2019.
