What Is a Routing Number?
A routing number, also known as an ABA number, is a nine-digit security code that identifies a bank. The digits themselves correspond to different aspects of the financial institution. For example, the first two digits correspond to the 12 Federal Reserve Banks, while digits five through eight identify the bank itself (the final digit is called the “check digit”). Routing numbers have been in use since 1910, when they were formally introduced by the American Bankers Association — hence, ABA numbers.
Can Banks Have Multiple Routing Numbers?
Yes, some banks use multiple routing numbers, especially larger ones like Wells Fargo and Citibank. Different routing numbers can serve different purposes or different regions. Sometimes when a bank is merging with or acquiring another bank, it will also get the other bank’s routing number.

How Do You Find a Routing Number on a Check?
Your routing number is located on the bottom-left corner of your personal checks, including those issued by BMO Harris. Checks usually come with three sets of numbers: the routing number, your personal account number and the check number.
What Is the Routing Number for International Transfers?
International wire transfers use SWIFT codes to identify the banks that receive and transfer funds. BMO Harris doesn’t list a SWIFT code on its website, though multiple third-party sites list it as HATRUS44. BMO Harris notes that if you send a wire transfer by phone, you’ll need to complete a Wire Transfer Services Agreement.
