Labor Day is a national United States holiday that recognizes the hard work of Americans. It always occurs on the first Monday of September, which this year falls on Sept. 1.
Labor Day was created by the labor movement among United States workers, and was ratified as a public holiday in 1894. According to the Department of Labor, the day is “dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers” and acts as a “yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”
Are Banks Open on Labor Day 2014?
To recognize their laborers’ efforts, many businesses, offices and other organizations close their doors and give their employees a break from the daily grind. Most Americans get the day off of work, though a recent GOBankingRates poll found that one in five people will be working on Labor Day this year.
Chances are, however, those who expect to work this Labor Day are not bank employees. Labor Day is one of the federally recognized holidays during which banks close, often referred to as a bank holiday. Nearly all banks will be closed on Labor Day to offer their employees some relief.
In addition to banks, most public schools, libraries, government offices and agencies, corporations and similar institutions will be closed for the holiday as well. The postal service will be closed on Labor Day, and the stock markets will be closed.
