Methodology: GOBankingRates researched the median property listing price in every state and the District of Columbia on Zillow, and then divided 300,000 by each number to determine the size of house a budget of $300,000 can buy. State level data was not available for North Dakota; therefore, GOBankingRates found the median list price per square foot from a sample of six cities (Bismarck, Dickinson, Fargo, Waterford, West Fargo and Willison), and then found the median of those six. GOBankingRates divided 300,000 by this number.
