The holiday season is certainly a busy one, with many people rushing to make travel plans and get gifts under the tree in time. For the stock markets, though, the busy trading days take a break for the holiday. If you’re an investor, keep these stock market hours for Christmas Eve in mind.

Will the Stock Market Be Open Christmas Eve?

The stock market will not be open on Christmas Eve, making it a short trading week for the holiday in 2021. This year, Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, a day when the stock markets aren’t usually open. Instead, the Christmas holiday will be observed on Friday, Dec. 24, otherwise known as Christmas Eve. There will be no trading done and there are no open stock market hours on Christmas Eve due to this observance.

What Happens to the Stock Market When a Holiday Falls on Saturday?

It’s not usual for the stock market to be open on a holiday like Christmas. However, it is typical for the stock markets to be closed on the Friday before when the holiday falls on a Saturday. If it falls on a Sunday, the stock markets will be closed on the Monday in observance of that holiday.

What About Bond Market Hours on Christmas Eve?

On some occasions, closer to holidays, the bond markets will close early or remain closed. In 2021, the bond markets will close early at 2 p.m. on Dec. 23, the day before Christmas Eve. This is typical for early closure days for the bond markets.

Investing for Everyone

The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and bond markets are will keep regular trading hours up until Thursday, Dec. 23, when the bond markets will close at 2 p.m.; the stock markets will remain open during regular hours, but will close the following day on Friday, Dec. 24. Be sure to get your trades in before they close down for the long holiday weekend!

What Days Are the Stock Markets Closed?

Stock markets are open Monday through Friday for regular trading during their typical hours, except for the early closure days. The stock markets have closures for nine holidays each year and the bond market will close for 11 holidays.

Regular trading hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST; on early closure days, the markets will close at 1 p.m. EST.
