Bob Dylan Launches Heaven’s Door Spirits

Learn about the Nobel Prize winner's latest creative venture.

Bob Dylan, the 76-year-old singer-songwriter, author, painter, Nobel laureate and generational touchstone can now add “whiskey proprietor” to his impressive portfolio of achievements and accolades.

People familiar with Dylan’s extensive decade-spanning song catalog, which includes many cross-generational anthems, will recognize the whiskey’s moniker — Heaven’s Door — a reference to his 1973 hit, “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.”

Heaven’s Door Spirits is “a small-batch collection of handcrafted American whiskeys,” according to the company’s website. Three varietals launched this month: Tennessee Bourbon, Double Barrel Whiskey and Straight Rye Whiskey.

Don’t think of Heaven’s Door as another celebrity endorsement or licensing deal. Dylan, alongside his business collaborator, Marc Bushala, the mind behind Angel’s Envy bourbon, maintain creative control and ownership. In their partnership, Dylan brings his distinct ability to wax poetic on subjects of love, art, and culture, and Bushala raised $35 million for this new project.

In a statement to The New York Times, Dylan said, “We both wanted to create a collection of American whiskeys that, in their own way, tell a story.” Dylan said, “I’ve been traveling for decades, and I’ve been able to try some of the best spirits that the world of whiskey has to offer. This is great whiskey.”

Dylan joins the league of entertainers and musicians who have made their foray into the spirits world. Notably, Dave Matthews is the owner of a Virginia winery with the label The Dreaming Tree. Former Van Halen rocker Sammy Hagar received a reported $80 million for selling 80 percent of his Cabo Wabo tequila business.

Heaven’s Door Spirits will make its home in a 140-year-old Nashville church-cum-distillery. No word on the grand opening, but it will certainly become a must-visit destination and pilgrimage for Dylan die-hards and whiskey enthusiasts alike.

Heaven’s Door Spirits are available for purchase and the prices range from $60 to $90 per bottle.
