Companies That Traditionally Spend the Most Money on Super Bowl Sunday

Even if the Super Bowl itself is a clunker of a game, the commercials are usually still worth watching. To many, the ads are the reason to watch the broadcast.
With 30-second ads running at a whopping $5.6 million for this year’s Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a commercial during the big game is no small investment.

GOBankingRates looked at the top 30 companies that have spent the most on Super Bowl Sunday and found some interesting trends. The list is dominated by beverage makers and car companies, and the total number of seconds purchased over the 54 Super Bowls is 35,712.

Methodology: In order to find the 30 companies that have spent the most on Super Bowl Sunday, GOBankingRates used USAToday and Ad Age data from “Big game branding: Which companies rank as the biggest Super Bowl advertisers of all time?” to find the following data points: (1) company name; (2) total Super Bowl ad spending; (3) total ads aired; (4) total seconds of ads aired; and (5) number of Super Bowls advertised in. With these data points sourced, GOBankingRates was able to find the following for each company: (6) average dollars spent per Super Bowl ad; (7) average dollars spent per second of ad aired; and (8) average dollars spent per Super Bowl during which they aired an ad. All data was collected on and up to date as of Jan. 21, 2021.
