For many people, New Year’s Day means a day off from work and a morning to recuperate from a late night of ringing in the new year. But even if you welcome the opportunity to sleep in, by late morning or early afternoon, you’ll probably be itching to get out of the house.

New Year’s Day is a federal holiday, which means that government buildings, schools, post offices and banks are closed — including several other businesses, but not all. Many restaurants and stores are open on New Year’s Day.

So whether you’re looking for a place to enjoy New Year’s Day brunch, New Year’s Day dinner or you’re looking for sales and deals, here’s your guide to restaurants and stores open on New Year’s Day 2016.

Restaurants Open on New Year’s Day: Pizza Hut, Starbucks and More

If you don’t feel like cooking on your day off from work, you’re not alone. GOBankingRates reached out to major restaurant chains to see who was open on New Year’s Day. While restaurants typically close early on New Year’s Eve, most resume normal business hours on New Year’s Day. Here are the best restaurants to visit on New Year’s Day 2016:

  • Denny’s: Open 24 hours or normal business hours.
  • Applebees: Open normal business hours from 11 a.m. to midnight.
  • Starbucks: Open normal business hours from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., but some locations might open later.
  • Pizza Hut: Open normal business hours from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • McDonald’s: Will open late and close at the normal business hour.
  • Burger King: Will open late and close at the normal business hour.
  • Olive Garden: Open normal business hours from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • KFC: Open normal business hours from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Ruby Tuesday: Open normal business hours from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • TGIF: Open normal business hours from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m.        

Out of all the restaurants contacted, Chipotle is the only chain closed on New Year’s Day. It’s important to note that while most major restaurants have normal business hours on New Year’s Day, opening and closing times can vary based on location. Check with your local restaurant to confirm their hours.

Stores Open on New Year’s Day: Target, Whole Foods and More

In addition to restaurants, many retail stores and grocery stores will open on New Year’s Day, giving you an opportunity to take advantage of sales and promotions. Most stores haven’t received an official list of their New Year’s Day sales yet, however, past New Year’s Day sales prove that you can expect a few deals and promotions from many retailers.

Some of the more popular retailers that will have their doors wide open on New Years Day include Best Buy, Target and Walmart,” said Kyle James, owner and founder of Rather-Be-Shopping.com, a website that helps consumers save money with online and printable coupons.

Retail stores open on New Year’s Day 2016:

  • Walmart: All 24-hour locations will resume normal business hours, but other locations might open late or close early.
  • Target: Open normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., but some stores may open later.
  • Walgreens: Open 24 hours or normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Toys “R” Us: Open normal business hours from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Rite Aid: Open normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Lowe’s: Open normal business hours from 6 a.m to 9 p.m., but some stores might open later.
  • IKEA: Open normal business hours from 10 a.m to 9 p.m., but some stores might close earlier.
  • CVS: Open 24 hours or normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Grocery stores open on New Year’s Day 2016:

  • Albertsons: Open normal business hours from 6 a.m. to midnight.
  • Whole Foods: Open normal business hours from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Kroger: Open normal business hours from 6 a.m. to Midnight.
  • Meijer: Open normal business hours, or 24 hours. 
  • Wegmans: Opens at 7 a.m. and has normal closing hours. 
  • Publix: Opens at 7 a.m., but some stores might close earlier.

Stores closing early on New Year’s Day 2016:

  • Best Buy: Open until 7 p.m.
  • Bed Bath and Beyond: Open until 6 p.m.
  • BJ’s: Open until 7 p.m.
  • The Home Depot: Open until 5 p.m

Stores closed on New Year’s Day 2016:

  • Sam’s Club
  • Costco
  • Trader Joe’s
