Make These Delicious Copycat Girl Scout Cookies and Save

Drooling over Jason Momoa-inspired Samoas? Here's the recipe.

With badges and titles like “Top Cookie CEO” up for grabs, the competition during Girl Scout cookie-selling season is fierce. So look out, troop members — an industry disruptor is in your midst in the form of Colorado’s Charlotte Holmberg.

Referred to as a “future marketing exec” by food site The Takeout, this enterprising Girl Scout, with the help of her mom, made her sales campaign doubly sweet by adorning boxes of Samoa cookies — those crispy, coconutty, caramel-coated, chocolate-drenched bites of goodness also known as Caramel deLites in certain pockets of the country — with a little extra eye candy: a shirtless image of “Aquaman” star Jason Momoa.

Momoas Are a Hit on the Market

Samoas are currently the second-most popular Girl Scout cookie, right after Thin Mints, according to the Girl Scouts Organization. Charlotte’s clever decision to feature the popular star Momoa, whose last name rhymes with Samoas, on the cookie box sparked a viral new nickname for the cookies: Momoas.

On top of that, this best-selling flavor is also getting an extra push in sales thanks to Momoa fans eager to get to the front of the line to buy them.

“The moms are getting really excited and they’re saying that they need them,” Charlotte told a Denver News 9 interview. Even the troops directly competing with Charlotte to sell the most cookies have expressed interest in snagging some of the creatively packaged treats, the news outlet reported.

How to Make Your Own Samoas

If all this talk about Samoas has you craving some of your own, you can of course hit up your nearest Girl Scout — cookies will be available for purchase until the end of April. But what about when cookie-selling season comes to a close? Not to worry — we’ve got you covered with these copycat Samoa recipes that cost under 62 cents per serving, less than the going rate.

The Girl Scouts website states that it leaves it up to the individual councils to set cookie prices based on their local market — but prices on eBay for a box Girl Scout cookies hover near $5, putting the cost per serving at about 71 cents. And that’s if you have the willpower to stop yourself from devouring a single box in one go.

Samoa Recipe No. 1

This recipe comes from Tiffany at Creme de la Crumb, who boasts that it yields Samoas that are even better than the original. Wondering what the secret is? It could be that her topping recipe calls for 1 1/2 cups of semisweet chocolate chips and 3 tablespoons of heavy cream, which ups the richness factor in these layered delights.

Ingredients are listed as follows:

Cookies
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/3 cup sugar
1 1/4 cup flour
1/3 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon cold milk or water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Topping
1 1/2 cups coconut flakes
2 cups caramels, unwrapped
3 tablespoons heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips

Samoa Recipe No. 2

Baking Bites suggests using Werther’s Original chewy caramels for the topping of their homemade Samoas. This site prefers them because the manufacturer skips the partially hydrogenated oils other brands use and opts for real butter, sugar and cream. Ingredients are listed as follows:

Cookies
1 cup butter, soft
1/2 cup sugar
2 cups all purpose flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
up to 2 tbsp milk

Topping
3 cups shredded coconut (sweetened or unsweetened)
12-oz good-quality chewy caramels
1/4 tsp salt
3 tbsp milk
8 oz. dark or semisweet chocolate (chocolate chips are ok)

Jason Momoa and His Girl Scout Fandom

As of publication, Momoa has not yet commented publicly on the viral phenomenon of the cookie boxes that feature him so prominently.

But a photo he posted almost exactly two years ago on Instagram — featuring the blockbuster star surrounded by an enthusiastic Girl Scout troop — certainly suggests he would approve of Charlotte’s entrepreneurial instincts.
