2015 Emmys Outfits: How to Dress Like a Celebrity on a Budget

Celebrities will be hitting the red carpet at the Emmy Awards 2015 on Sunday, Sept. 20, looking like a million bucks. That’s because they can afford pricey gowns, expensive jewelry and stylists to fine-tune their appearance.

However, you can look like any one of the Emmy Awards nominees and attendees — even if you don’t have a TV star’s financial resources.

10 Tips on How to Dress at the Emmys 2015 for Cheap

GOBankingRates asked stylists and shopping experts to share their tips for looking like a celebrity on a budget. Whether you’re going to a cocktail party or a wedding, here’s how you can replicate celebrity fashion at the Emmys 2015:

1. Rent a Dress

The best way to get a designer dress at a fraction of the retail price is to rent one, said New York City personal stylist Hillary Cooper. She recommends RentTheRunway.com, which lets you rent apparel for four or eight days. You can get a free backup size, and return shipping is also free.

“It’s a great way to borrow something to get fashion for the moment,” Cooper said. For example, a sequined Badgley Mischka cocktail dress that retails for $750 can be rented for just $35 through the website.

2. Head to Discount Stores

It might take a little bit of digging through racks — or hunting online — but you can find the latest fashion trends and name brands at discount stores such as Century21, Marshalls or Neiman Marcus Last Call, said money-saving expert Andrea Woroch. Typically, you’ll find discounts of up to 60 percent, she said. Or, head to the clearance racks for even deeper discounts on the already reduced prices.

3. Browse Sales Racks at High-End Stores

Don’t overlook high-end department stores during your search for affordable celebrity fashion; you can find great deals on their sale racks, said CouponSherpa.com shopping expert Kendal Perez. For example, browse the Nordstrom sale section for formal gowns and find savings of up to 40 percent. Plus, if you order on Nordstrom.com, you get free shipping both ways — which means you can easily order gowns in multiple sizes and return what doesn’t work.

4. Shop Sample Sales

If you live in or near a big city such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami or New York, you can take advantage of sample sales to score designer apparel that’s discounted 70 percent to 90 percent off, said Cooper. These sales typically happen twice a year in January and June when designers try to unload inventory before the next season’s merchandise arrives in their stores.

You’re not entirely out of luck if you don’t live in a big city. Cooper said that items that aren’t sold during sample sales often end up at discount retailers such as Marshalls and T.J.Maxx.

5. Get a Fit That Flatters

When trying to look like a celebrity, focus on the fit of a dress rather than the designer because it won’t look good if it doesn’t fit well — regardless of who designed it, said Perez. “Part of the appeal of celebrity fashion is how well designer dresses fit the individual wearing them,” she said.

If you find a great deal on a dress, but it doesn’t fit quite right or is too large, don’t despair. You can have it tailored, which is something celebrities often do to get the right fit. Perez said you can expect to pay $30 to $60, on average, to have a dress altered. Look for coupons.

6. Buy Used or Vintage

Head to an upscale consignment store to find gently used, deeply discounted evening attire or pre-owned designer clothes. If you’re not satisfied with the selection at your local consignment store, Woroch recommends shopping online at thredUP.com and RecycleYourFashions.com or browsing the Poshmark mobile app for endless used fashion choices.

You might get lucky and find a vintage gown, which is a great way to wear something no one else will be wearing, Cooper said. Plus, she said it’s a trick celebrities use if they really want to stand out.

7. Find a Deal on Shoes

You might only wear a special-event dress once, but you can use the shoes for your special outfit again and again for nights out and even work, said Maegan Watson, a wardrobe expert and founder of My Dear Watson, which offers full service wardrobe solutions and personal branding services. The key is to buy something that will stand out.

You can find discounted designer shoes online at 6pm.com, Shoes.com and Zappos. Perez recommends looking for coupons at sites such as CouponSherpa.com to score even bigger savings. Another great coupon code resource is RetailMeNot.com.

8. Get a Makeover for Free

Unlike celebrities, you likely won’t be asked what you’re wearing — as in which designer designed your outfit — if you go to a party or event, Watson said. But if your picture is taken, you want to make sure you look your best — and the right makeup can help.

Watson suggests visiting the makeup counter at a department store or Sephora to get a free makeover. But first, you should ask the makeup artist to recommend a lipstick in your budget that you can buy to have on hand for touch-ups.

9. Tune Into YouTube for Hairstyle Ideas

You can achieve a red carpet-worthy hairstyle by watching short YouTube videos, said Sabina Trojanova, who blogs about fashion and travel at Girl vs Globe. She recommends watching YouTube tutorials from personalities such as Dulce Candy and Zoella. If you prefer reading to watching, you can find easy-to-follow hairstyle tutorials on Freckled-Fox.com.

10. Accessorize for Less

“Jewelry doesn’t have to be expensive to look great,” said Cooper. And, you certainly shouldn’t spend a lot on a statement piece that you’ll only wear once. You can buy something that looks real for a fraction of the cost at retailers such as Claire’s, J. Crew or Banana Republic, she said.
