  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 21.
  • Although it’s a federal holiday, not everything is closed.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on Monday, Jan. 21, this year. The federally recognized holiday observes the birth of the eponymous civil rights activist. The Rev. King fought tirelessly for the advancement, recognition and safety of black people before being murdered in 1968.

This federal holiday is meant to be a “day on, not a day off,” but still, many institutions shutter themselves for the day. However, some businesses will remain open.
