The first Social Security payments of 2024 went out in January, with a smaller than previous cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) — 2023’s COLA was significantly higher due to the effects of the pandemic and inflation.
The new payment amounts in 2024 reflected an increase of only 3.2% as compared with 2023’s 8.7%, which was the highest adjustment the Social Security Administration (SSA) has offered since 1981 and the fourth-biggest COLA in the history of the program. The 2024 COLA gave the average Social Security recipient around $59 more per month than 2023.
For Supplemental Security Income recipients, the payment schedule for general Social Security recipients is still on Wednesdays, depending on birthdate. That cadence, according to the SSA, is as follows:
- For birth dates that fall on the 1st through the 10th, recipients are paid on the second Wednesday of each month.
- For birth dates that fall on the 11th through the 20th, recipients are paid on the third Wednesday of each month.
- For birth dates that fall on the 21st through the 31st, recipients are paid on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
