Savings Tip: Buy Second Hand

Posted in Saving Money , Savings Account

Making second-hand purchases is a unique way to manage your savings if you’re looking for penny-pinching ideas. It may seem a little unorthodox to purchase other people’s items, but it often happens that someone else’s trash is your treasure.

The good news is that there are a lot of places to find these often high-quality treasures. Here are a few:

Save at Used Car Lots

This is probably one of the more obvious places individuals make second-hand purchases. In the past, there was a larger stigma attached to purchasing cars off of used lots. But now, with so many repossessions bringing almost-new cars back to the lot, it is easy to find a reasonably-priced, good-looking car that runs just as good as new.

Save at Thrift Stores and Consignment Shops

If you don’t mind buying clothes, jewelry, and even electronics and furniture that were owned by someone else, then a thrift store or consignment shop is a great place to make second-hand purchases and better manage your savings. You can find some great surprises in thrift stores where people have given away items they no longer need in hopes that someone who’s looking to save money can use it. Likewise, consignment shops pay money to individuals who don’t need their items. While what you find in a consignment shop won’t be as cheap as in a thrift store, it will be much cheaper than what it originally cost.

Save at Garage and Yard Sales

Aside from thrift stores, you can find some great deals at garage or yard sales. Many times, you’ll catch people in the middle of spring cleaning, and others may be moving and need to quickly get rid of their items. At these sales, you can haggle to lower the price so that you get an item up to 90-percent off of its original value. Even better, if you catch a household at the end of their sale, they may let some items go for free.

Finding ways to manage your savings can take creativity and perseverance, but making second-hand purchases here and there can help make it easier to put money in the bank.
