For decent savings accounts rates not far from the beach, check out La Jolla Bank. As usual, the best rates are available from the bank's website: 1.75% APY with a so-called Internet Savings account. It requires $1000 minimum deposit, and only $100 minimum to avoid fees. Be careful though - if you leave your account with less than $100 for a while, you will be charged $1 per day.
As this is a savings account, you are limited to a maximum of six deposits or withdrawals per month.
Even though La Jolla Bank is a small regional bank, it does have branches as far as Beverly Hills, Newport Beach, and Dallas, TX.
It goes without saying that your savings account will be protected by FDIC (up to $250,000 until at least 12/31/2013, and at least $100,000 after that).
The bank does not offer online access to your account. If you are seriously considering opening an account with La Jolla Bank, check whether its branch locations and office hours work for you. If you travel a lot, or if you live far from their branch offices, you probably need to consider a larger national bank instead.
Don't forget to compare this bank with other savings account rates offers.
