Labor Day 2017 falls on Sept. 4 and millions of Americans will get to have the day off from work. Deemed the unofficial end of summer, Labor Day always falls on the first Monday of September.

A good Labor Day weekend involves two things: a great destination and some spending money. If you need to get cash from your bank’s ATM or speak to a bank teller, check to see if your bank is open on Labor Day, as many banks might be closed. Make sure you plan ahead of time, whether you want to plan a fun barbecue for your friends or head out of town for Labor Day.

Are Banks Open on Labor Day?

Financial institutions generally follow the Federal Reserve schedule, and because Labor Day is a holiday observed by the central bank, expect most branch locations to be closed. The NYSE, Nasdaq and SIFMA will also be closed on Labor Day, allowing employees to enjoy the day with family and friends.

Of course, some banks open on Labor Day — for at least part of the day — so if you absolutely must do some banking in-person on the holiday, you might be able to find an open branch. Generally speaking, banks that are open on a holiday are often those with branches located inside a store — like a supermarket — so make sure you inquire in advance.
