Graco Deaths and Recall: Why Buying the Right Stroller is an Investment in Safety

Posted in Financial News , Investments

When it comes to investments, you typically don’t consider household items like strollers to fall into this category. However, in the wake of the Graco stroller deaths and subsequent recall, we are all reminded that any purchase we make could have a serious effect on our loved ones. On Wednesday morning, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of 2 million Graco strollers as a result of injuries and infant deaths. Now parents have to use even more caution when choosing the right stroller to bring into the home.

Graco Stroller Deaths and Recall

A report from the CPSC revealed that four deaths between 2003 and 2005 were linked to the Graco Quattro Tour and Metrolite strollers. Infants under a year old who were unstrapped got their heads wedged between the stroller tray and seat bottom, resulting in strangulation.

The ensuing recall includes versions of the Quattro Tour made between Nov. 2006 and Metrolite made before July 2007. Those designed after these years are said to have a larger space gap due to new industry design rules.

Investing in the Right Stroller

Very often, when we think of making investments, we think of stocks, bonds or mutual funds. In actuality, every time we spend our hard-earned cash, we are making an investment in something. In this case, the investment is not just in the right stroller for your money, but your child’s safety, which is why it’s good to know what to look for before making a purchase.

  • Brakes: Look for strollers that have easy-to-operate brakes, but also find a stroller that doesn’t allow your child to reach the release lever in case you have to park the stroller and move out of arm’s length.
  • Base: Find a stroller with a wide base that won’t allow it to tip over if your child moves around.
  • Securing mechanisms: Make sure the stroller has both a seat belt and harness that secures away from the neck.

Also, it’s very important to check for recalls from all stroller manufacturers to ensure you’re not buying one that could endanger your child. The CPSC publishes a list of all child product recalls (not including toys) that could help keep you abreast of any products that could place your child in harm’s way.

Ensuring Your Child’s Safety

It’s also good to consider some safety tips to make sure you’re not putting your child in danger after making your purchase. For instance, you never want to:

  • Leave your child unattended or unstrapped.
  • Hang handbags or other items on the stroller handles.
  • Fold up the stroller with your kids nearby.

By keeping these tips in mind, you could keep your child as safe as possible after purchasing a quality stroller. Remember, the investment choices you make could have a huge, long-lasting impact–whether it’s a market security or a home product. Always research your options thoroughly before making a decision.

If you currently own as recalled Graco stroller model then you can contact the company for a free repair kit at 1-877-828-4026 or by visiting www.gracobaby.com. In the meantime, the CPSC recommends that you discontinue use of the stroller immediately.
