Having a million-dollar nest egg along with your Social Security means different things in different states, and in different cities within those states.
For those fortunate enough to have this amount to work with in retirement, how long it will last depends on numerous factors — not the least of which is where you live. A new analysis by GOBankingRates reveals some stark differences as it hones in on the five largest cities in all 50 states.
For each city, GOBankingRates has calculated how long $1 million is likely to last you in retirement — with and without Social Security included. The study includes data from the U.S. Census, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Social Security Administration and Sperling’s BestPlaces.
Key Findings
- In the most affordable cities in the list, $1 million and Social Security could last you as long as 40 years.
- In the least affordable cities in the list, you might exhaust those funds in less than 10 years.
- Among the cities included, San Francisco has the highest average annual expenditures after Social Security — a sky-high $123,000.
- Roswell, New Mexico, has the lowest average annual expenditures after Social Security — just $21,681. If you retire there with $1 million and Social Security, you could be set for 46 years.

Based on GOBankingRates’ calculations, $1 million alongside Social Security will last you 28-38 years if you’re retiring in one of Alabama’s five largest cities. If you leave Social Security out of the equation, the numbers shrink to 17-20 years.

Methodology: GOBankingRates identified each state’s five most populous cities using the 2023 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. It then calculated the national average annual expenditures for individuals aged 65 and older, based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2023 Consumer Expenditure Survey, adjusted to 2025 dollars via the BLS CPI inflation calculator, and paired that with annual Social Security income figures from the Social Security Administration’s August 2025 data. Using Sperling’s BestPlaces cost-of-living index, GOBankingRates estimated city-level annual expenditures by scaling the national average to each city’s index score. It then calculated how many years $1 million would last in each location by dividing that amount by both the full annual expenditure and the expenditure minus Social Security income. All data was collected on Nov. 20, 2025.
