Housing is typically the biggest expense most people have to pay for each month. It is especially expensive lately, due to such factors as inflation, a shortage of homes for sale, and other issues that have driven up rent prices.
Of course, rent prices are not all the same. They vary widely from state to state, region to region, with places in the middle of the country often being a lot cheaper than the coasts.
Depending on where you live, you could pay as little as $671 on average for a one-bedroom apartment — in West Virginia — or as much as $1,831 in California. Generally speaking, the coastal states run higher, with states like New York, Massachusetts, Virginia, Oregon and Washington being among the priciest places to live, while Southern and Midwestern states offer better rates.
This piece takes a straightforward look at the average cost of a one-bedroom in every state (except for Maine and Vermont, which had to be omitted due to insufficient data). Figures come from ApartmentList’s February 2024 rent data. Read on to find your state.
