If you’ve considered moving abroad, you’re not alone. According to the World Population Review, more than 8 million Americans live outside the U.S. for various reasons, including work, family, political concerns and new experiences. With 195 recognized countries around the globe, there are plenty of options. But some countries are more attractive to Americans than others in 2024.

Mexico

Currently, 1.6 million Americans live in Mexico, per the U.S. Department of State, making it the top country for U.S. expats. With the booming tech industry and giants like Intel, Oracle, HP and IBM having offices and other facilities in Mexico, there are ample work opportunities. In addition, the cost of living is almost 41% lower than in the United States, per Numbeo. According to the site, a family of four can live on $ 2,445 a month without rent, and a single person can live on $676.20 monthly, excluding rent.

Canada

Over 1 million Americans call Canada home, per the MCA Cross Border Advisors, and there are several benefits to moving to our neighboring country. Known for its stunning scenery, excellent healthcare system and high quality of living, Canada also has a thriving job market. Work opportunities span across several industries, such as healthcare, IT and energy research. In addition, the cost of living is 7.6% less than in the U.S., according to Numbeo, which states a family of four can live on $3,813 a month without rent, while a single person’s average monthly expenses are $1,061 without rent.

Portugal

Portugal is emerging as a popular country for Americans to reside in, and for good reason. The southern European country boasts a high quality of life, rich culture and history, good public healthcare, beautiful weather and safety — Vision of Humanity ranks Portugal the seventh most peaceful country in the world. The job market is growing for English-speaking job seekers in tourism, IT and hospitality. Plus, it’s an affordable country. On average, Portugal is 35% lower than in the U.S., per Numbeo, and a family of four can live on $2,572 a month without rent, while a single person’s estimated monthly costs are $730, excluding rent.
