Easter celebrations may be the latest victims of higher egg prices in the United States. While those prices have dipped in recent weeks, they’re still much higher compared to last year.
In fact, according to Newsweek, the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicted egg prices will increase close to 60% this year. That comes despite the chicken population starting to recover from the impacts of the avian influenza.
All of this comes as millions of families across the U.S. are preparing for Easter celebrations, where eggs have been among the longtime stars for generations.
Real Easter Eggs
According to a study from Clarify Capital, the average cost for a dozen eggs is now $7 — and the nationwide price to hit $5.18 would be way higher than $1.49 in 2018.
What does that mean for your Easter egg hunt this year? Let’s do some quick math. Assuming you need 36 eggs for your hunt, at the average cost of $7 for each dozen, that’s a fast $21 out of your bank account.
If you’re the one who typically hosts a big egg hunt for family, friends and neighbors — you can expect to pay much more this year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average price for a dozen eggs was just about $4 at the end of 2024.
If we assume the same price for Easter last year, that means the three dozen eggs this year for the hunt cost $9 more than in 2024.
Plastic Easter Eggs
You may be a family who prefers to hide goodies inside plastic eggs for the hunt. At Walmart, you can grab 40 plastic eggs for around $4.
The cost is probably not much higher at other similar stores. Additionally, plan to spend around $6 to $10 for goodies to go inside those eggs. If you go this route, the total for those eggs and candy should be less than $15.
