Plenty of people fantasize about owning a waterfront home out in the country — but then they see the prices, and quickly beam back down to reality.

If you’re willing to spend $800,000 to $1 million or (much) more, you’ll find hundreds of waterfront homes across the U.S. that off both luxury and a quiet rural atmosphere. But if your budget is a lot smaller than that, you’ll need to scout around.
