Americans are paying more for utilities than ever, and the increases are likely far from over.
J.D. Power reported last month that average household utility costs had jumped by 41% over the previous five years. Last summer, nonprofit PowerLines.org said utilities had requested $29 billion in rate hikes this year, surpassing all-time highs set in 2024. And the Center for American Progress warns that more than 40 states can expect price hikes this year or next.
The size of the dent in your wallet varies based on where you live, of course. Annual utility costs across the 50 states range from about $3,400 to as high as $9,600.
To produce a state-by-state rundown of utility costs, GOBankingRates has analyzed data from the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center, along with the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Here’s the list, ranked from the state with the lowest cost of utilities to the one with the highest.
