One of the most exciting parts of planning your retirement is the freedom to live anywhere you want to. You could go closer to the beach or the grandkids. You could even move to where the fishing and hiking are great. While the sense of possibility that comes with retirement hasn’t changed, the price of being able to retire where you want to has fluctuated within the last 10 years.

To get a sense of how much the cost of housing has changed over all 50 states and the District of Columbia between 2013 and 2023, GOBankingRates compared the cost of housing for people aged 65+ in 2013 using 2013 dollars before adjusting that rate for 2023 dollars. Then, we compared that rate to the cost of housing in 2023 and shared the total difference.

For this study, GOBankingRates analyzed the change in the cost of housing for retired residents for the last decade. First GOBankingRates found the 2023 and the 2013 cost of living index for housing as sourced from the Missouri Economic and Research Information Center. GOBankingRates found the average national expenditure cost for housing as defined as “Shelter” from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey for retired individuals for 2013 as well as 2023. The annual housing cost of living was calculated and using the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s CPI Inflation Calculator the average housing expenditure cost in 2013 can be calculated to show 2023 prices. These were then compared to the actual 2023 prices to find the difference in housing prices for retired residents over the last decade. All data was collected and is up-to-date as of March 11th, 2024.
