More Americans are renting in retirement than ever before. Between 2013 and 2023, the number of renters ages 65 and over increased by 2.4 million — the largest growth of any age group, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.
There are a number of reasons retirees may choose to rent, including downsizing, higher mortgage costs and relocating to be closer to family. Whatever the case may be, it seems like this is a trend that will continue to grow.
As for where retirees are renting, there are a few cities that have seen a major influx over the last 10 years of Americans ages 65 and older who are renters, according to a Point2Homes analysis.
Based on the analysis of the 75 biggest metro areas, these are the 10 where the population of 65+ renters has increased the most over the past decade.
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
- % change in renters ages 65+ (2013-23): 88.7%
Jacksonville, Florida
- % change in renters ages 65+ (2013-23): 83.7%
Austin-Round Rock, Texas
- % change in renters ages 65+ (2013-23): 81.1%
New Orleans-Metairie, Louisiana
- % change in renters ages 65+ (2013-23): 69.7%
Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas
- % change in renters ages 65+ (2013-23): 66.5%
Raleigh, North Carolina
- % change in renters ages 65+ (2013-23): 63.5%
Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Connecticut
- % change in renters ages 65+ (2013-23): 60.4%
Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas

Lakeland-Winter Haven, Florida
