By 70, earning more income gets harder than ever before, and many at that age have to live with what they have.

I asked ChatGPT to build a frugal budget for a 70-year-old and it laid out a plan for making a little go a long way across seven key categories, assuming a modest monthly budget of $2,200, with $1,800 from Social Security and $400 from a small pension.

Essentials First

First, the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot outlined the non-negotiables that it referred to as “core expenses.”

Housing

ChatGPT insisted that “housing is everything,” and that frugal seniors must downsize, move into senior housing or take any other measures needed to rein in costs until housing is no more than 30% to 40% of their budget, including:

  • Rent, property tax and HOA: $700
  • Utilities (electric, gas, water): $150
  • Internet and phone: $70
  • Total: $920

Food

Then, there’s food, which ChatGPT concluded budget-conscious seniors can afford if they “focus on cooking at home, store brands and senior discounts.”

  • Groceries: $250
  • Occasional dining: $50
  • Total: $300

Healthcare

Next, ChatGPT cautioned 70-somethings that “healthcare is often the No. 1 expense risk at this age.”

  • Medicare Part B premium: $175
  • Supplemental plan (Medigap or Advantage): $150
  • Prescriptions and copays: $100
  • Total: $425

Transportation

In the final core expense category, ChatGPT claimed that “reducing to one car or using senior transit lowers costs further.”

  • Gas: $80
  • Insurance: $90
  • Maintenance fund: $50
  • Total: $220

Lifestyle and Flexible Spending

With the needs accounted for, ChatGPT moved on to budgeting a slim amount of spending room for wants.

Personal and Miscellaneous Spending

The bot earmarked a modest, three-figure monthly amount for things that make life a little bit more livable.

  • Clothing, toiletries: $75
  • Entertainment (streaming, hobbies): $60
  • Total: $135

Giving and Family Support

Next, ChatGPT allocated $50 per month for charitable work or lending a hand to friends and family, proving that giving is possible even on the slimmest budgets.

Financial Security

Finally, ChatGPT carved out a little room to build a financial cushion, setting aside $100 per month and reminding me: “Even in retirement, this is crucial for home repairs, medical surprises and inflation.”

You’ll notice that the grand total is $2,150 per month, not $2,200. That’s not because AI can’t count. It intentionally built in $50 of wiggle room per month to add elasticity to the plan.

Well played, ChatGPT. Well played.
