No one likes to pay their electric bill, but after reading these findings, you might see that you’re living in one of the more affordable states. Energy experts at GreenImprove analyzed each state’s data on average monthly electricity consumption and current average electricity prices. They found that the average electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in September 2024 was 13.94 cents. Some states pay almost three times that.
Take a look at which states have the highest electricity bills.
Hawaii
Those living in Hawaii have the most expensive electricity bills at 32.76 cents per kWh. The reason Hawaii’s bills are so high is that the islands are not connected to an electricity grid and depend on energy derived from petroleum-fired electricity generation which is very expensive. The high cost of electricity is maybe why Hawaii ranked last when it came to energy consumption.
Connecticut
If you’re living in Connecticut, you’re probably paying around 21.62 cents per kWh, or $154.79 a month. The high bills are because much of the state’s power comes from outside state lines. The price of delivering that power is quite expensive.
Alabama
Residents of Alabama consume a lot of electricity — the fifth-highest in the nation at 1,178 kWh. The high consumption contributes to the high bills which come out to around $146.18 a month. The price of kWh is relatively low in comparison to other states on this list at 12.41 cents kWh.
Missouri
Missouri also consumes a lot of electricity. Missouri residents consume about 1,077 kWh. The average monthly bill for a Missouri household is $142.48 a month.
South Carolina
South Carolina is another state that consumes a lot of electricity, causing residents to pay more on their monthly bills which average out to $140.46 a month. Residents of South Carolina consume about 1,088 kWh.
Arizona
The first West Coast entry on the list is Arizona which is mostly due to high consumption. People living in the state consume 1,061 kWh. The average bill for an Arizona household comes out to be around $139.62 a month.
Mississippi
Mississippi is third-highest when it comes to consumption which is why it’s in the top 10 most expensive states for electricity. On average, a Mississippi household will pay $136.98 a month on their electric bill.
North Dakota
The average North Dakota electric bill is $135.06. Though electricity only costs 12.37 cents per kWh, the bills are high in North Dakota because they consume 1,186 kWh on average.
Maryland
If you’re living in Maryland, you probably pay around $134.74 a month on your electric bill. Consumption is lower than a lot of other states on the list at 968 kWh, but it’s also pricier than others at 13.92 cents per kWh.
Virginia
Virginia’s average bill is not far behind Maryland at $134.66 a month. Consumption, however, is higher at 1,086 kWh. The cost is 12.40 cents per kWh.
