The rich really do keep getting richer, especially if you reside in California. A new study from GOBankingRates reveals that upper-class Americans are becoming wealthier across 50 U.S. cities. Of the top 50 cities, 40% are based in California — with a significant number of cities in Northern California metros.
To determine which cities have the greatest number of upper-class Americans becoming richer, GOBankingRates isolated the nation’s top 50 cities with the highest mean household income, minimum of 8,000 total households and $162,000 in household median income. From there, factors sourced include each city’s 2020 median household income, 2023 median household income, three-year percentage change in median income, 2020 percentage of population with a household income of $200,000 or more, 2023 percentage of population with a household income of $200,000 or more and three-year percent change in population with a household income of $200,000 or more.
Key Findings
- Summit, New Jersey, ranked in first place with $56,262 as the change in household median income over the three-year period of 2020 to 2023. Four more New Jersey cities ranked throughout the top 50, including Westfield (#5), Princeton (#15), Hoboken (#25) and Ridgewood (#43).
- California dominated the rankings, accounting for an impressive 20 cities in the top 50. Of these 20 cities, 18 are based in Northern California, including Dublin (#2), Belmont (#3), Los Gatos (#6), Burlingame (#7), Danville (#10), Newark (#14), Cupertino (#18), Santa Clara (#19), Menlo Park (#22), Mountain View (#24), Palo Alto (#30), San Carlos (#31), Milpitas (#34), Fremont (#35), Foster City (#40), San Ramon (#44), Pleasanton (#46), and Lafayette (#47). Methodology: For this piece, GOBankingRates first took the 50 cities with the highest mean household income and with a minimum of 8,000 total households and at least $162,000 in household median income as sourced from the 2023 American Community Survey as conducted by the US Census Bureau. With these cities selected, GOBankingRates then found each city’s: (1) 2020 median household income; (2) 2023 median household income; (3) three-year percent change in median household income; (4) 2020 percent of population with a household income of $200,000+; (5) 2023 percent of population with a household income of $200,000+; (6) three-year percent change in population with a household income of $200,000+. Factors (3) and (6) were then scored and combined. All data was collected and is up to date as of March 7, 2025.
