You might be surprised how far some millennials are willing to go to own a home. Some might even be open to selling plasma or finding a sugar mommy or daddy.
Consumers of all ages are facing struggles in trying to afford homes. According to Forbes, the overall housing market remains difficult with record-high prices and elevated mortgage rates. Tariffs and immigration policies from the administration of President Donald Trump may prolong some of these issues.
Sacrifices for the American Dream
Some potential homebuyers are willing to make interesting sacrifices to own a home. According to a survey of 1,000 Americans from Clever Offers, millennials seem the most open to making those sacrifices.
It makes sense that potential homebuyers are willing to make some sacrifices. After all, despite issues with affordability in the housing market, Americans still think owning a home is a major part of the American dream. In the survey, around 90% said so.
Lifestyle Sacrifices for a Home
According to the survey, when renters were asked about several sacrifices they might make to be able to own a house, none had a majority of respondents willing to make them. However, for every sacrifice listed, millennials were two to five times more willing to make them than boomers.Â
Here’s a look at what percentages of those surveyed would be willing to make these sacrifices to be able to own a home:
Take on a side gig or second job: 29% of boomers, 50% of Gen Xers, 62% of millennials
Buy a fixer-upper house: 28% of boomers, 47% of Gen Xers, 56% of millennials
Skip meals: 17% of boomers, 31% of Gen Xers, 30% of millennials
Find a ‘sugar daddy’ or ‘sugar mommy’: 11% of boomers, 27% of Gen Xers, 22% of millennials
About 40% of non-owners said they’ll never be able to own a home. But millennials remain more hopeful — only 20% of those renters don’t think they’ll ever be able to buy a house.
