Deciding when to sell any asset is a tricky business because you never can be sure where its price will go in the future — which means you never can be sure whether selling it now is the right financial move. This applies to rare coins just as it applies to stocks, real estate or any other investment.
The difference with rare coins, however, is that they almost never go down in value, which means you don’t have to worry too much about losing money on them.
The main exception would be if a large, unknown stash of coins is suddenly discovered that puts more of the coins on the market and dilutes their overall value. This is such a rare occurrence that when it does happen, it’s big news — like when more than 800 Civil War-era gold coins were discovered in a Kentucky cornfield in 2023.
But just because you don’t face much risk of losing money on rare coins doesn’t mean there aren’t good times to sell. This might happen when interest rises in a particular type of coin.
For example, in 2026 the United States celebrates its 250th birthday. Selling rare bicentennial coins could be a smart move this year.
Here are four rare coins to sell in 2025.
1976-S Silver Bicentennial Quarter (Regular Strike)
The average value of a 1976-S silver quarter in MS68 condition is around $95, according to the Chronicle Collectibles website. But you can get a lot more for regular strike versions that “lack the mirror-like surface” of proof coins. One of these versions sold for $19,200 in 2019.
1979 Susan B. Anthony Dollar Over 1978 Jefferson Nickel
This coin has seen a recent rise in interest among collectors. It features a minting mistake with the image of Susan B. Anthony stamped over the top of Monticello on a Jefferson nickel. Overstamps are rare to begin with, but this one stands out because it involves two separate years. High-grade specimens have sold for more than $15,000.
Double Denomination Bicentennial Dollar Over Bicentennial Quarter
This Type 4 silver coin was minted in Philadelphia, according to CoinValueChecker. It features an error in which a 1976 Eisenhower dollar was struck on a 1976 quarter — a rarity that has put its value at around $28,000.
Double Denomination 1976 Bicentennial Quarter Struck on a Dime
Here’s another error coin featuring two denominations — in this case one that featured a bicentennial quarter struck on a dime planchet, which resulted in a much smaller-than-normal quarter. One specimen sold for $9,200 in 2020, according to CoinValueChecker.
