While $50,000 can be a decent salary, depending upon where you live and its cost of living, taxes can take a significant bite out of that income.
In many states, you’ll part with a bigger percentage of your pay than you’d like. Total net taxes can vary wildly depending on where you live, meaning the slice of your $50,000 that you actually get to keep in your pocket varies wildly depending on where you live. The best scenario is living in states that don’t’ have a state income tax, like Alaska, Florida or Nevada, to name a few. Hawaii, on the other end, takes a big bite, at 7.9% of your gross income.
In order to find what a $50,000 salary really looks like in every state for a single person, GOBankingRates used data from the Tax Foundation and the Social Security Administration, plus calculations using an in-house income tax calculator, to find out how much take-home pay you can expect in every state on a $50,000 salary.

Jordan Rosenfeld contributed to the reporting of this article.
Methodology: For this study, GOBankingRates analyzed the 2024 tax rates to find the average amount the average person pays in state taxes in each state. First, GOBankingRates analyzed the state income tax brackets for 2024 as sourced from Tax Foundation. Assuming a $50,000 income the effective tax rate, marginal tax rate, state income taxes paid and take-home pay can be calculated for each state. The states were sorted to show the least taxes paid to the most taxes paid. All data was collected on and is up to date as of June 13, 2024.
