When it comes to the wealthiest of wealthy suburbs in the Midwest, Illinois dominates the list.
That’s based on a recent analysis by GOBankingRates that blended data from the U.S. Census Community Survey, along with Zillow. Of the top 20 most affluent Midwest suburbs, nine are located in the Land of Lincoln. Illinois boasts the top three entries on the list, and five of the top six.
Ohio is next with three, followed by Missouri and Wisconsin with two each.
Here’s a countdown of the wealthiest Midwest suburbs, ending with No. 1. The rankings are based on average household income. We’ve also included the value of a typical home for each suburb.

Methodology: GOBankingRates looked at all cities in the Midwest (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin) with 5,000 households or more. GOBankingRates then isolated the 50 suburbs with the highest average household income, as sourced from the 2023 American Community Survey. GOBankingRates was then able to find which Metro Area they were a suburb of, as well as the 2025 typical home value for the city, as sourced from Zillow. All data was collected and is up to date as of August 19, 2025.
