Methodology: For this study, GOBankingRates analyzed some of the most expensive cities across the country to find the places where frugal people would never live. First, GOBankingRates found cities that are typically considered the most expensive in the United States (sourced from RocketHomes’ “Most Expensive Cities in US,” U.S. News & World Report’s “Most Expensive Places to  Live” and Forbes’ “Most Expensive Cities in U.S.” GOBankingRates analyzed each city to find cost of living as sourced from Sperling’s BestPlaces, average single family home value as sourced from Zillow Home Value Index and total population, total households, mean household income and median household income as sourced from the U.S. Census American Community Survey, and the livability index as sourced from AreaVibes. Using the cost-of-living indexes and the average expenditure costs for all residents, as sourced from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey, the average expenditure costs for each city were calculated. Using the average home value as well as the national 30-year fixed mortgage rate, as sourced from the Federal Reserve Economic Data, the average mortgage cost for each city was found. Adding the average mortgage cost and the average expenditure costs gave the average total cost of living for each city. To qualify for this study, cities had to have at least 10,000 households.
