GOBankingRates talked to travel experts about their hidden-gem destinations that are safe, affordable and fun for middle class families, including those with young children.

Here’s a look at the best European hidden gems for your next family vacation.

Madrid

“I want to highlight Madrid, Spain, as a hidden gem in terms of being an underrated family destination,” said Kristin Espinar, a travel blogger behind Must See Spain. “Madrid is not only affordable and convenient but it has many fun, educational and affordable activities that families can enjoy together.”

Toledo, Spain

Just a half-hour or so high-speed train ride away from Madrid is Toledo. “It has a rich history where families can roam Medieval streets and awe at impressive historical architecture,” Espinar noted. “Families should definitely visit the Alcázar and Toledo Cathedral, and take their time exploring the maze-like old town.”

Segovia, Spain

If you’ve heard about Segovia, it may be for the Roman aqueduct. But this hidden gem also has a fairytale-like castle and lots of historic charm.

According to Espinar, “The first thing to do is go to the historic center and make sure to walk under the ancient aqueduct. Then wander the historic center, shopping and trying tapas. Also when in Segovia, you must find a great spot to taste the local cochinillo, or roast suckling pig.”

Vienna

Vanessa Gordon, publisher at East End Taste, recommended that families choose a hub first and foremost to fly into Europe and have easy access to public transportation.

“For instance, Vienna is well centered in Europe and families can seamlessly travel to affordable and safe destinations like Bratislava in Slovakia, Brno in Czech Republic or Budapest in Hungary,” said Gordon. “In Bratislava, for example, the city is walkable and there are great destinations all within walking distance of one another including Bratislava Castle, Michael’s Tower, Bratislava Old Town and more.”

Limoges, France

Per Gordon, another great way to see Europe is to venture to the smaller cities within a two to three hour train distance from the major cities.

“Limoges in France, for example, is a great affordable destination that is family friendly with several beautiful surrounding villages and towns,” Gordon said. “Oradour-sur-Glane is a very moving memorial town and Pierre-Buffiere and Rochechouart are beautiful villages and communes to visit. It’s also a great way to explore the outdoors and countryside and even get a taste of the French language and have the opportunity to practice it for yourself,”

Bremen, Germany

“Lastly, I recommend exploring the smaller cities of northern Germany close to The Autobahn, including Bremen and Hamburg, which are both easily accessible by train,” said Gordon. “Bremen also has an airport which is an easy connection from Frankfurt.”

If you’re searching around for great locations in Europe for your family, one thing that may be helpful to know is the rise of eco-friendly accommodations.

“There are lots of hidden gems out there if you’re willing to look,” said Ryan Saylor, a director of product marketing at BEYOND. “Our data reveals a rising interest among young people, including families with children, in eco-friendly accommodations, which often translates into more affordable prices, with the added benefit of being located outside crowded hot spots.”

In addition, Saylor recommended, “Try to be flexible with your travel dates and try different filters to find the perfect destination for your family without spending the kids’ college fund.
