If you’re looking to get your money in better shape in the new year, perhaps a well-known financial expert has some advice that might work. In fact, Barbara Corcoran puts her words into action. She does it with fitness — but you can apply the same advice to develop a new habit to reset your money in 2025.

Fitness trainer Mark Langowski, founder of Body By Mark, posted a video to his Instagram channel talking to Corcoran about her fitness regimen. She gave him a simple answer.

“I work out three days a week with a trainer or I would never do anything,” Corcoran said. “I do weightlifting. I do stretching. That’s all I do. And then after that I have a big-ass donut.”

Here is advice from Corcoran that can impact your money habits in 2025.

Keep It Simple

So what can you learn from Corcoran’s fitness regime and how can you apply it to developing a new habit to reset your money?

The first lesson may be to keep it simple. Corcoran said she keeps it simple with weightlifting and stretching.

“Experts agree that the stickiest habits are ones that are neither too complicated nor too demanding,” according to Inc. “So the simpler and easier you make your own habit, the likelier you’ll be to keep doing it over time.”

You can apply this to sticking with a new financial habit in 2025. Say, for example, you want to create a better budget. You can keep it simple with fewer categories to make it easier to stick to in the new year.

Hold Yourself Accountable

Corcoran said she does her exercising with a trainer or else she wouldn’t do it. That shows the power of accountability. In this case, having someone else know about and hold you to your regime helps you stay committed. Additionally, by keeping to a regular schedule of working out three days a week, she can better stick to it.

Going back to the budget example, you might work with a friend or a professional to help finalize your spending and saving plan and stick to it. Also you could stick to a regular schedule of checking the budget on the same evening each week.

Reward Yourself

You can imagine that donut after working out is a big incentive for Corcoran. The idea of giving yourself a reward for a job well done may also be a good plan for you when it comes to sticking to a new financial habit.

While you’re building your budget, you could set a savings goal for yourself. Perhaps you put your mind to saving a certain amount from each paycheck. When the paycheck is deposited and you save that target amount, you can reward yourself with something such as a favorite movie or cooking a meal you really like. It can help train your mind to associate achieving a financial goal with enjoying something pleasurable.
