A handbag is so much more than a repository for your keys and wallet; it can showcase your style and bring a flash of color and verve to any outfit. And in the hands of the right designer, it can even become a true work of art.

The unique fusion of luxury and creativity found in designer bags is part of the reason fashionistas salivate over them on the red carpet — and why some of the world’s wealthiest people spend amounts of money greater than most people’s monthly rent.

GOBankingRates decided to delve into the world of opulence and explore some of the most expensive designer bags in existence.

Elizabeth Taylor’s Gold and Diamond Evening Bag: $218,500

Unsurprisingly, actress, activist, and all-around icon Elizabeth Taylor once owned an evening bag that dazzled everyone who beheld it. This woven gold clutch, complete with lettering in glittering diamonds, was so famous and so stunning that it outpriced almost every other item at the 2011 Christie’s auction of Taylor’s personal effects.

Chanel Diamond Forever: $261,000

This bag, designed by Karl Lagerfeld himself in the style of the iconic Chanel flap bag, combines real alligator leather with white gold hardware. Its clasp is adorned with 334 diamonds — no, that is not a typo — totaling approximately 3.56 carats. The Diamond Forever bag was auctioned during amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS benefit, blending beauty with philanthropy.

Chanel Elongated Classic Flap Clutch: $300,000

What this Chanel bag lacks in storage space, it makes up for in elegance — and price. Created in 1989, this clutch is crafted from black lambskin as a minimalist touch on the classic flap bag. You may wonder why such a slim bag commands a six-figure price tag, but it was listed on 1stDibs for a jaw-dropping $300,000.

Hermès Faubourg Birkin: $400,000

With this clever bag, you can carry a miniature replica of the Hermès storefront on your shoulder — for a steep price. Available in four different shades, the Faubourg Birkin ranks among the most collectible bags from the brand. While the Neige (French for Snow) model is particularly valuable, Sotheby’s sold a rare 20-centimeter version with palladium hardware for nearly half a million dollars in 2022.

Hermès Ginza Tanaka Birkin: $1.9 million

In a collaboration with elite Japanese jeweler Ginza Tanaka, Hermès created a bag that dazzles in every sense of the word. With 2,182 diamonds encrusted into its surface, this Birkin shines literally and figuratively. Priced at an eye-watering $1.9 million, it begs the question of whether there is such a thing as spending too much on a handbag.

Li Bingbing’s Lana Marks Cleopatra Clutch: $400,000

If the Cleopatra clutch bag, with its ornate crocodile-skin styling, looks familiar to you, it’s probably because some of the most famous actresses around, including Helen Mirren, Angelina Jolie, and Charlize Theron have carried it. However, the most famous and expensive version was custom-made for Chinese actress Li Bingbing. Her clutch features her name written in pink gold and embellished with pink diamonds.
