What’s Driving the Stock Price?
As the above numbers show, you wouldn’t have made a ton of money off your Amazon stock purchase even if you had invested $10,000 at the beginning of 2025.
That stands in stark contrast to the company’s longer-term performance. Over the past three years, Amazon’s stock price has soared by over 150%.
So why did growth slow to a crawl in 2025? One reason is that Amazon “could be slated to underperform the market” after three years of robust gains, The Motley Fool reported.
A lot depends on how Amazon’s advertising and Amazon Web Services (AWS) businesses perform. These are growing much faster than the core online retail business and should continue to “increase rapidly over the next few years,” The Motley Fool noted.
On the downside, Amazon faces “massive” capital expenditures as it aims to increase its artificial intelligence computing capacity. These costs are “absorbing almost all of its cash flows,” according to The Motley Fool, which worries investors and weighs on its stock price.
