Here are the details on what’s covered by the Chase Sapphire cards’ travel insurance benefits.

Trip Cancellation or Interruption Insurance

Perhaps you’re traveling in the winter and a massive snowstorm hits. In this case, you can be reimbursed up to the following amounts for your prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses. These include passenger fares, tours you’ve booked and hotels.

For Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred, coverage amounts for cancellation/interruption are up to $10,000 per person or $20,000 per trip.

These are a few scenarios that are out of your control and would allow you to cancel and get reimbursed for your trip:

  • Sickness or loss of life: Certain types of sickness that prevent you from traveling qualify for coverage. This type of coverage also includes the death of an immediate family member. (Your pets are not covered.)
  • Military: If you or your spouse are in the military and receive a change in orders
  • Court-related issues: Jury duty or subpoena

There are restrictions to keep in mind, including preexisting health conditions, traveling against the advice of your physician, or if your trip goes beyond 60 days.

One important thing to note is that if you decide to voluntarily change your plans and need to cancel the trip, you will not be covered.

Trip Delay Reimbursement

If you get stuck at the airport because of a covered hazard forat least the minimum number of hours to qualify for coverage, or if you need to stay overnight due to your carrier, you and your family will be covered. You’ll be reimbursed for meals, lodging and transportation to and from the hotel for up to $500.

Baggage Delay Reimbursement

If your bags are delayed for more than six hours, Chase will reimburse you for up to $100 per day for five days. So if you purchase a new toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo and a pair of pants, you’ll be covered up to this limit. This applies for both Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred.

Lost Luggage Reimbursement

It can happen to us all — you arrive in one place and your luggage doesn’t. This is where Chase’s Lost Luggage benefit can provide reimbursement for this hassle. You’ll receive the difference between the cash value of your belongings and any reimbursement from your airline or cruise ship. 

For both cards, you can receive up to $3,000 per person, per trip. There’s what is called a “sub-limit” of $500 for things like jewelry, cameras and electronics. If you receive $500 for any of these items, you’re subtracting from the total of $3,000 and not adding to it.

Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver

You may have heard that some credit cards come with built-in rental car coverage — Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred are among them.

The next time you rent a car, you can decline the insurance that comes with the rental agency and charge the entire rental cost of the car with your Chase Sapphire card. If you’re in an accident, you’ll be covered up to $75,000 for theft or collision damage with Chase Sapphire Reserve. With Chase Sapphire Preferred, you’ll get reimbursed for up to the actual cash value of the rental car.

Keep in mind that you won’t qualify if your rental period goes beyond 31 days for both credit cards.

Roadside Assistance

If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, you can call for roadside assistance if you need a tow, jump start, locksmith or fuel delivery or if you need to get a flat tire changed. You’re covered up to $50 per incident, four times a year.

For Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholders, you can get pay-per-use roadside assistance, including up to five miles for standard towing (you have to pay for mileage beyond this limit), tire changing and jump starts. As you can see, the benefits are not as robust as Chase Sapphire Reserve.

Travel Accident Insurance

In the event that you or a member of your immediate family gets hurt while on your trip and dies or sustains a loss that qualifies for coverage, such as loss of speech and hearing, you’re covered up to $100,000 for 24 Hour Travel Accident Insurance with either of the Chase Sapphire cards. You’re also covered up to $500,000 with Chase Sapphire Preferredor up to $1 million with Chase Sapphire Reserve under Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance. 

How To File a Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance Claim

If you need to get reimbursed for either Chase Sapphire credit card, you’ll need to file a claim. You must file within 20 days of the date of the incident or within a reasonable length of time. Remember to have all of your receipts and documents ready to go. Here’s how to file your claim:

  1. Go to the claims center at and select “New Claim.” For Chase Sapphire Reserve, you can also call 888-675-1461. For Chase Sapphire Preferred, call 888-320-9961.
  2. Enter the details of your claim and your personal information.
  3. Gather all of your documents and upload them — these include receipts, bills and photos of your damaged luggage or rental vehicle, for example.
  4. Submit your claim and wait to hear from a specialist, usually within five business days.

Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance Coverage Limitations

As with any kind of insurance, there are restrictions, and Chase is no different. Each type of insurance, whether it’s for flights or lost luggage, has limits to what is covered.
