Owning a large house has always been a key factor when it comes to living the American Dream. So it should come as no surprise that America has some of the largest homes in the world: The largest home in the U.S. is the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, which comes in at a staggering 175,000 square feet. This is a far cry from the median size home of 2,386 square feet that a majority of Americans live in.
The standard of living has certainly changed in the last 50 years. New homes today are actually 1,000 square feet larger than in 1973. And households are getting smaller too — according to the American Enterprise Institute, the average household size has shrunk to a record low of 2.54 persons per household as of 2015. That means the living space per person has almost doubled in just 42 years. No matter how much room you have, though, you probably think you could use a little more — but it will cost you.
To find the price of a 3,000-square-foot home in each state, GOBankingRates analyzed data from Zillow outlining the median list price per square foot for homes across the country. According to Zillow, the median list price per square foot in the U.S. is $155, making the cost of a 3,000-square-foot home about $466,129.
There are many states that fall significantly below this estimate — for example, the price of a 3,000-square-foot home in Mississippi is $180,121 less than the national average. A number of Southern and Midwestern states fall below the national average as well. The Northeast is another story, however, with a Massachusetts home this size costing a whopping $805,861. And Hawaii? Let’s just say you’re looking over $1.5 million. Find out how much you’ll have to fork over to afford a huge home in your state.Â
