While it’s not a key feature on real estate listings in the way that the amount of bedrooms or bathrooms are, but it is a key consideration for renters when scoping out prospective new spaces: Space.

We’re not just talking about square footage, which of course, is a highlighted core detail on any listing — we’re talking about storage space. Unless we’re ultra minimalistic, we’ve got stuff. And we need a place, ideally in-house, to keep it.

StorageCafe’s research team analyzed 243 cities (each with at least 2,000 renters) to find the 10 that ranked highest in apartment size, availability of walk-in closets and built-in storage. 

10. Cary, North Carolina

• Average apartment size (sq. ft.): 1,005 
• Percentage of apartment buildings with in-unit closets: 61.7%
• Percentage of apartment buildings with extra storage: 45.0% 
• Average rent: $2,103

9. Virginia Beach 

• Average apartment size (sq. ft.): 960 
• Percentage of apartment buildings with in-unit closets: 56.7%
• Percentage of apartment buildings with extra storage: 28.4% 
• Average rent: $1,940

8. Knoxville, Tennessee

• Average apartment size (sq. ft.): 926 
• Percentage of apartment buildings with in-unit closets: 55.3%
• Percentage of apartment buildings with extra storage: 33.3%
