When it comes to the single lifestyle, it’s tempting to base decisions about where to live on individual preferences like weather and cultural opportunities. But none of those things matter much if a high cost of living stretches your budget to the breaking point.
To provide insight for singles looking for the best states to live, GOBankingRates analyzed singles’ expenditures for each state using data from the Missouri Economic and Research Information Center. The analysis included every fiscal quarter from the first quarter of 2021, when President Joe Biden took office, to the first quarter of 2024. Here’s a look at the states where single people have seen the best improvement in cost of living since Biden took office.
North Dakota
If you’re looking for a lower cost of living as a single person, you may want to consider North Dakota. It finished as the best state to be single during Biden’s presidency. Based on the GOBankingRates analysis, the average monthly cost of living for a single person has dropped $119 since Q1 2021. North Dakota is fairly affordable overall. According to RentCafe, the cost of living is about 6% lower than the national average.
Pennsylvania
Just behind North Dakota on the list of best states for singles during the Biden presidency is Pennsylvania. The average monthly cost of living for a single person here has dropped by $116 since he took office.Â
Vermont
Another Eastern state takes third place for reduced living costs during Biden’s presidency. The average monthly cost of living in Vermont dropped from $1,977 in Q1 2021 to $1,872 in Q1 2024, for savings of $105 per month.
Minnesota
You might have a few reasons to consider Minnesota as a single person. The GOBankingRates analysis found that the average monthly cost of living has dropped by $94 while Biden has been president. In addition, Spokeo listed Minnesota among the top 10 states for singles, based on factors like a high percentage of singles.
Delaware
Biden’s home state of Delaware might be a good spot for budget-conscious singles. The average monthly cost of living for a single person has dropped about $77 during Biden’s presidency. That ranks it among the top states with the best improvement over the past few years.
Hawaii
You might think of Hawaii as a beautiful but expensive state. However, it has seen one of the largest drops in average monthly cost of living numbers for singles — $73. The average monthly cost of living for a single person in Hawaii is $2,452.
Rhode Island
The small may be mighty when it comes to states for singles. While the cost of living in Rhode Island is higher than the national average, and the state has some of the most expensive cities in the country, the average monthly cost of living for singles has dropped $69 per month since Q1 2021.
Kansas
If you’re thinking about moving to a Midwestern state, you may want to consider Kansas. It tied for eighth place for singles since Biden’s presidency, based on its $67 drop in the average monthly cost of living. And there’s more good news — Spokeo included Kansas on its list of best states.
Wisconsin
The average monthly cost of living for a single person in Wisconsin dropped by about $67, tying for eighth place with Kansas. Wisconsin’s cost of living is 2% lower than the national average, according to RentCafe. Housing is around 11% lower than the national average, while basics like groceries are about 2% higher.
Oregon
You’ll have to head to the Pacific Northwest to reach the next state on the GOBankingRates list. Based on a $55 reduction in the average monthly cost of living for singles, Oregon has been among the best states to be single during Biden’s presidency. That drop may help because overall, Oregon is a pricier state than many others. In fact, the cost of living is about 10% higher than the national average, according to RentCafe. That’s partly due to housing in Oregon being 22% higher than the national average.
