Dasha Kennedy’s Instagram says it all: 342,000 followers are learning and growing from this up and coming influencer who offers what she calls competent and culturally-relevant financial advice.

When it comes to financial literacy, Kennedy leads with intention, relevance and mindfulness, which is why she recently posted about 10 ways she invested in herself and upgraded her money management, all at no cost — below is what she said.

Fall in Love With What You Have

For Kennedy, that’s taking a look around at what was already in her possession and care, then genuinely enjoying it. “I stopped waiting to be rich to enjoy living,” Kennedy said.

Take a Break

That’s not only when it comes to your work, but for yourself. No one can have their nose to the grindstone 24/7, nor should they feel guilty about it. Kennedy recalled that she gave herself permission to “sit down, unplug and not equate rest with laziness.”

Keep a Close Circle

This can be with your friends, your family, your community or whoever you want. Just make sure they are able to listen, give you space to be yourself and allow you to heal when need be. If not, Kennedy suggested stop explaining yourself to those who do not listen and learn how silence can become a form of self-care.

Acknowledge Yourself

The road to wealth, security and a happy life is paved with ups and downs. That is why Kennedy suggested showing yourself every day in the mirror-not with the intention to fix anything. Rather, with the idea to tip your hat to who you are and how far you have come.

Let Past Money Go

We all make mistakes when it comes to money decisions we made in the past. Kennedy wrote that she forgave herself for her own choices with money and is no longer punishing that younger version of herself who did not have the knowledge, skills or understanding of money that she has in the present moment.

Treat Yourself Kindly

This means trying to make peace with who you are and speak to yourself the way you’d speak to someone that you care about. For Kennedy, this meant no longer calling herself lazy or behind and replacing those notions with grace and truth.

Stop Comparing and Despairing

“I unfollowed people who made me feel like I was always lacking,” Kennedy explained. This could be a mentor who no longer serves your learning or a social media influencer that makes you feel bad instead of inspired. Whatever the case may be, Kennedy emphasized self-preservation in the form of protecting your peace and energy.

Ask for Help

According to Kennedy, asking for help that was emotional, financial or spiritual takes practice and then you have to stop feeling shame for the request. Suffering in silence will only hold you back.

Set Boundaries

Saying no and not providing a reason why allowed Kennedy to stretch who she was and become the financially successful figure she is today. It seems tough at first, however, the more you set boundaries and stick to them, the more freedom you give yourself to succeed.

Keep Small Promises to Yourself

You deserve to be praised, acknowledged and held accountable — to yourself. Kennedy closed on the note that keeping small promises to yourself is a trust-building muscle for your entire being. This could include getting more exercise, eating healthy or doing something creative just for fun.
